Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold one-third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Growth

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos Group bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in market values of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned more than $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents Pitt's most successful film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Performance

Mercedes are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
